I was reflecting this morning about the joy I was feeling in turning 60 next week. For many people, their 60th has negative connotations of now being regarded as a ‘senior’. So why my immense feeling of joy?
I think I am just so grateful that I have reached 60. I think of all those who have died in their childhood and teens, never to experience life as an adult. To those who passed tragically in their 20’s and 30’s, some never experiencing the joy of parenthood. To those in their 40’s and 50’s who have worked so hard all their lives ‘for the future’ only to be denied it, and for many not experiencing the joy of being a grandparent.
Every year I lose a couple of friends, acquaintances or business colleagues. It provides perspective when battling through the tough times in life, that most of us experience at some point.
For so many, they no longer have the choice of life – and yet we do. Do we really value that just for itself? I have always felt a kind of responsibility not to live a ‘Groundhog’ life – living the same day over, and over, and over. Every day I try to reach that little bit further, push myself to gain a little more growth, try a new experience, or just stop and experience a moment in its fullest glory.
I feel such gratitude and an overwhelming responsibility to live every day to the fullest. I certainly have my challenges moving forward in my life – but I am so grateful and joyous that I have that opportunity, today.
Today, I have the choice of joy. I’ll take it, thank you.
