In the article “Anticipating Your Needs: Emotional Intelligence Is the Key to Smarter Gadgets” we assume we will have a near future solution to integrating emotions into machines. However, as we progress down the trans-humanism pathway, I rather suspect that this will take more time and effort than many people assume. As we continue to progress down the path of singularity, the mapping of human emotions is a major challenge, one which we have yet to identify how to achieve.
If cognitive psychologists haven’t figured out how to classify emotions, it will be a while before they can they be programmed into devices. Using gait, posture, heart rate, skin conductance and tone of voice to model emotional algorithms will be future complicated considering that each person has a unique baseline for each of these, and reacts to different emotions in different ways. Personalised machine learning comes to mind – and that is a step beyond current IoT and AI capabilities.
